Munich is curious

Munich’s most curious places – Between measure, mysteries and noses

Munich isn’t just about white sausages, Bayern Munich, Oktoberfest, BMW, and beer gardens – it’s also a city full of curiosities. Places and stories so bizarre that you wonder if someone hasn’t secretly eaten a little too much Obazda.

Take Stachus, for example, which is actually called Karlsplatz. But no one in Munich, not even the subway passengers, calls this square Karlsplatz. That’s Stachus. Period. And only a few tourists ask about Karlsplatz and are quickly informed that it’s actually called Stachus. Why Karlsplatz is still called Stachus today is also a curious story that I’d be happy to tell you.

But there are other curious stories. Of street and square names that still refer to something that no longer exists, but which the people of Munich still remember through their names. Or the many bizarre stories that make this city so lovable.

One of Munich’s most bizarre customs – lion petting at the Residenz. Locals and tourists alike stroke the lions’ noses and hope for good luck. Perhaps it does – it brought one person a lot of luck, and perhaps it will bring you luck too.

In short: Munich is not just beautiful – it’s curious. I’d be happy to show you some of Munich’s interesting places.
