Lola Montez always told in Munich, she was a Spanish dancer. But she wasn’t, she was a Irish dancer. She arrived in Munich in 1846 caused quite a stir – and not just because of her passionate dances. Lola Montez was a woman who knew how to shake up the city.
An affaire becomes a state crises
Lola Montez wasn’t from Munich, in fact, she wasn’t even born in Bavaria. Nevertheless, she managed to ensure that her name remains well-known in Munich and beyond, and is always associated with Munich.
With her cheeky smile and unwavering self-confidence, she captured hearts – and sometimes nerves – of the Münchner. She became especially famous for her affair with King Ludwig I, which led to a scandal still remembered today. Legend has it she was so charming that even the king totally fell under her spell – naturally causing some dramatic moments.

Lola Montez was a master of curiosities. She wore eye-catching dresses that sometimes revealed more skin than fabric, and her quick-witted speeches left people unsure whether to laugh or blush. Her motto was: “If you’re in Munich, do it right – with a touch of drama!” And indeed, there was plenty of drama
But her conspicuous and scandalous life ultimately proved to be her downfall. When she went too far, she not only triggered another scandal over her affair with the Bavarian King Ludwig I, but also an entire revolution. Eventually, she was banished, and the king abdicated in favor of his son Maximilian. But her legend lives on.
Even today, the spirit of Lola Montez can be felt in the streets of Munich. Join me on a journey of discovery and bring Lola Montez back to life in the places where she lived.
